My OB/GYN rotation was at Woodhull Hospital in Bushwick, Brooklyn. I was very excited to start this rotation because this was a field that I had been interested in working in in the future. I found this rotation to be educational and provided a variety of experiences. My first week was L&D Day shift where I was able to interview patients from triage, as well as become associated with the patients who were about to go into labor. Additionally, I was able to assist in natural vaginal births, c-sections, as well as an emergency D&C.
During my GYN on-call week, I followed the PAs as they saw consults that arrived in the ED. This included following up on patients’ post-hysterectomy, assessing a pediatric patient who was pregnant, as well as evaluating a patient with chronic recurrent Bartholin cysts. I was even able to assist in a marsupialization- which was an interesting and unique experience!
Finally, I spent my last two weeks in the clinic, where I was able to perform pelvic exams, bimanual exams, and breast exams. I was also able to do perform pap smears as well as learn how to educate patients on PCOS and endometriosis.
Overall, I felt that I learned a lot from the PAs, doctors, and midwives in this hospital— and further deepened my interest in this field.
