Rotation was my Surgery rotation located at NYPQ. In this rotation I had to do 3 weeks of general surgery, 1 week of urology, and 1 week of neurosurgery. Additionally, I had one 24 hour shift during this rotation. On a typical day, my shift started at 6am and ended at 6pm, however I would pre-round on a patient prior to 6am so that I can present the patient during rounds. I would end up following that same patient until they are discharged. I was then scheduled to scrub into surgeries for the rest of the day and often got the chance to assist. My responsibilities included prepping the patient prior to surgery, retracting, suctioning, and helping with closing. There were even instances where I would direct the scope during laparoscopic procedures. I would then round on patients again if the procedures I was scheduled for ended earlier in the day. Moreover, I was also responsible for writing up 4 extra H&Ps as well as making 2 presentations for this rotation. I definitely learned a lot during this rotation, not only from my own studying but from the residents, surgeons, and PAs I worked with as well.
